Polyphemus moths are one of the few giant silk moths widespread throughout North America. Like luna moths, they have no mouthparts as adults, so their sole purpose is to lay eggs and mate. Polyphemus moths only last for 2 weeks both in the wild and in captivity. These moths have eyespots to fool predators that represent the eyes of an owl. Males exhibit feathered antennas and thinner abdomens while females have thinner antennas and thicker abdomens.

At Spencer's Butterfly Fairy Museum, we display live polyphemus moths all year round. Since they can hibernate as cocoons in the winter, they can live in the museum year round. We get the moth cocoons from moth breeders. The museum offers releases of these huge moths.
